Western Thessaloniki has gained a renewed green space for recreation and connection with nature through the creation of the "Park of the Senses" in the Municipality of Ampelokipoi-Menemeni, an initiative by HELLENiQ ENERGY. The project has upgraded a public area, creating a welcoming meeting point for people of all ages while enhancing the quality of the urban environment.
The project was implemented in cooperation with the Municipality as part of HELLENiQ ENERGY's long-standing Corporate Responsibility programme, which supports local communities, contributes to the development of resilient cities, and promotes sustainable growth.
The "Park of the Senses" invites residents and visitors to experience nature through colours, scents, and textures. Trees, aromatic plants, and herbs come together to create a vibrant ecosystem that strengthens local biodiversity while offering a unique experience for people of all ages.
Beyond enhancing the area's appearance, the planting is expected to deliver significant environmental benefits. Specifically, it is estimated to absorb approximately 225 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO₂) during the park's first year of operation, while total carbon sequestration over the next decade is projected to reach nearly 7.9 tonnes of CO₂.
At the same time, the increased vegetation is expected to improve the area's microclimate, helping reduce temperatures during the summer months by up to 3-6°C. In addition, it will serve as a natural filter for air pollutants, contributing to improved air quality.
The active participation of the company's employees played a key role in the park's transformation. More than 100 volunteers, including employees and their family members, took part in planting aromatic plants and herbs, as well as carrying out landscaping, painting, and other aesthetic enhancement works.
The creation of the "Park of the Senses" is another tangible example of HELLENiQ ENERGY's ongoing commitment to investing in initiatives that generate meaningful environmental and social value, creating lasting benefits for local communities and contributing to a more sustainable future for all. As part of this strategy, the Group will implement a similar initiative this autumn in Attica, further expanding its positive environmental and social impact.
